CHRISTOPHER STEEL

BRITISH COMPOSER (1938-1991)

Links to current CD and DVD releases, audio samples, information on upcoming performances, printed music, youtube video, and biography

Christopher Steel, late twentieth century composer, arguably one of the most outstanding British composers of his generation now has a global following. Like many other greats he enjoyed some success in his lifetime, but now enjoys posthumous recognition that had somewhat eluded him. Described in the New Grove's Dictionary of Music as a "fluent and resourceful composer", the popularity of his work is growing in momentum, with a substantial catalogue that includes sacred choral music with anthems and cantatas ideal for church use, a wealth of organ music, chamber operas, symphonies, large scale works, concerti, children's music, and smaller works used by the Associated Board and other organisations.

His music has some parallels to Matthias, Walton, and Britten. Like them he has remained accessible to a broader audience without compromising his artistic integrity; a rich tonality with a depth and edge that juxtaposes the beautiful neoromantic counterbalance. His music is available through a number of outlets in printed form and on CD, with work including sacred choral music featured in recordings by Durham Cathedral Choir, Wells Cathedral Choir, organ music with artists including Roger Fisher, and in the famous recently re-released "The King's Trumpeter", Crispian Steele-Perkins, internationally renowned trumpeter, and Stephen Cleobury, organist, and director of the world famous King's College Choir, Cambridge. Steel's "People Look East", an advent carol, recorded by Durham Cathedral for Priory Records available on their compilation of Christmas Carols, "Christmas Joy vol.2", is proving very popular, as is his choral anthem "Thou Art The Way", available on CD, and to purchase in printed form through the excellent compilation, "More Than Hymns".

Steel's music has been commissioned and performed across the world at such international events as The Three Choirs Festival. The cantata "Paradise Lost" received its world premiere in 1974 at Gloucester Cathedral, and he has had subsequent representation in it. His opera for children "The Selfish Giant" (1980) written with librettist Mark Valencia has been performed by a number of schools. BBC1's "Songs of Praise" premiered his anthem "The Morning Stars Sang Together" sung by Chester Cathedral, and over many decades his music has aired on radio stations including BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, and Classic FM in the UK, and internationally, especially in the US and Europe.

On March 21st 2009 his large scale work "Passion and Resurrection according to St. Mark" received its world premiere to critical acclaim performed at Tewkesbury Abbey by the Cheltenham Bach Choir and the Regency Sinfonia conducted by Stephen Jackson. You can listen to an mp3 sample of it from the sublime "Surrexit Christus" movement. You can hire it from chesternovello and read a review here Steel regarded this work as his finest, and there are some who would agree with that analysis.

If you are looking for sacred choral anthems, organ music, late twentieth century symphonies, large scale choral masterpieces, children's operas, advent and Christmas carols, small scale chamber and instrumental music, in a modern and accessible idiom to move and inspire you, then explore the exceptional musical canvas of Christopher Steel!
